4 Tips to Protect Your Home While on Summer Vacation

Posted: July 15, 2019 by Matthew Hillier

Summer is a great time to take time off and enjoy some TLC on vacation. However, most of us are so focused on the excitement of our trips that we don’t take much time to consider the security of our homes while we’re away. Studies show that burglaries take place 10% more in the summer than in the winter. Keep your home protected while on vacation with these 4 helpful tips.

#1 Lock All Windows & Doors
Over 30% of burglars enter a home through unlocked doors and/or windows. To avoid this mishap, ensuring that all windows and doors are closed and locked. You may also want to make sure that any repairs regarding doors and windows are completed prior to your vacation.

#2 Use Light Timers
Light timers can be a very helpful and affordable option to preventing burglars from entering your home. Light timers make it very hard for burglars to determine whether someone is home. Most light timers are easy to install and can be a quick solution for keeping your home protected while you’re away.

#3 Get Rid of the Hidden Keys
While hidden keys can be helpful in the event you or a family member finds themselves locked out of your house, they are the strategy for how over 30% of burglars enter a home. While on vacation, make sure to remove all hidden keys to avoid this disaster.

#4 Do Some Yard Work
An overgrown lawn that has not been upkept can be a dead giveaway that your home is vacant.
Whether this is on your own prior to your departure or with a landscaping while you’re away, arranging lawn care can be crucial to your home’s break-in prevention.
