About DeWitt

DeWitt is a city in Clinton County Michigan. The city is located within DeWitt Township, although it is politically independent. DeWitt was named after DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York during the 1930’s. It was first settled by Captain David Scott, who moved here from Ann Arbor in 1833 and platted the land. In the early 1900’s the Lansing and Suburban Electric Railway opened the community to a new era of prosperity. DeWitt was incorporated into a city in 1967. DeWitt was ranked as the 75th best place to live in the United States by CNN Money.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,702 people and 1,207 families residing in the city. The median age was 34 years old. The median income for a household in the city was $69,174 and the median income for a family was $78,935.

DeWitt Public Schools has 2,900 students in six buildings. The DeWitt Panthers baseball team has won 2 state titles, once in 1983 and then again in 1993. The football team has made 3 straight trips to the state finals in 2002, 2003, and 2004. All those times they ended up in 2nd place.

DeWitt is on the Looking Glass River, a tributary of the Grand River. Every Saturday during the spring, summer and fall there is a Farmer’s Market in downtown DeWitt. There are many bicycle and pedestrian pathways throughout DeWitt. There are five parks in the city, many that include: play structures, pavilions, soccer and baseball fields, pedestrian paths, grills and plenty of open green spaces.
