Things to Consider When Moving to a New State

Living in a new state can sometimes feel like living in a new world. Be prepared to make a big move by checking all of these questions off your list!

Where can I find affordable housing there? Some areas may be pricier than others. Know what you can afford and what areas fit your budget.

What is the cost of living in the area I’m looking at? Consider the price of gas, state taxes, and your commute to work.

What am I living near? Map out the nearest stores, towns, and gas stations. Also take a look at the natural scenery around you, like nearby lakes, mountains, and forests.

If you have children, what are the schools in the area like? You want to know what the school calendar looks like to get them enrolled on time, and what types of programs are available so they can take classes they enjoy.

What kind of climate does the new state have? You might have to buy a whole new wardrobe to live comfortably in the new town!

What is the culture of locals? Look like you were born in the new city by befriending people who live there and learning how to fit in.

Do I know anyone currently living there? If you know at least one person, you can have a buddy to help you explore and get acclimated to the area.

How is the job market? If you’re moving there unemployed, you might want to know what kinds of jobs are available before taking the leap.

How long am I going for, and how am I going to get there? Is the distance drivable, or do you need to fly? You may need to make special arrangements to get all of your belongings there.

What goals do I want to accomplish there? You may be moving for a job, or just a fresh start. Think about how you can grow in this new place and take action to do it!
