Mason, Michigan is located in Ingham County about 20 minutes south of Lansing with US 127 running through the west side of the city. Mason has an estimated population of around 8,320 residents and has a total area of 5.13 square miles. Mason is known for its many annual festivals and celebrations, and is also recognized as a Tree City USA.
Since 1990, Mason has been honored by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA because of their appreciation and protection of the environment. The Tree City USA program works to make cities and towns across our country greener. As a member of this program, the city maintains a tree board, has a community tree ordinance, and celebrates Arbor Day.
Mason has seven public parks spreading across almost 91 acres, Hayes park being one of the largest with a lighted ball field, basketball court, two tennis courts, a sledding hill, and a gathering space with picnic tables and grills. Bond Park has a skate park and a roller hockey rink, while Laylin Park has two fishing ponds with fishing docks. Rayner Park spreads across 60 acres and is home to three ponds and plenty of nature trails. These are just a few examples, but it’s clear that there is something for everyone to do in one of Mason’s parks. Sycamore Creek also flows through the city.
For those with children, Mason Public Schools is dedicated to serving over 1,000 students in the area through three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and an early childhood education center. The district offers the Mason Promise Scholarship that guarantees two years of funding at Lansing Community College for selected students.
Some of the most notable festivals and celebrations the city has are Down Home Days, Spring Fling, the Ingham County Fair, Independence Day Celebration, Mason Holidays Celebration, the Annual Memorial Day Parade, and the Sun Dried Music Fest. Many of these are held at the downtown Courthouse, and the city also puts on a Thursday Nigh Live outdoor concert series during the summer.
